Breaking the monopoly of MediaTek, Hisense made a great contribution this time, and another domestic chip realized self-research

As technologies such as networks, chips, and human-computer interaction have become more mature, smart TVs have gradually become an indispensable terminal device in the home. According to data released by industry consulting agency Nielsen, my country's smart TVs accounted for a steady increase in the proportion of color TV shipments, and even reached 91% in 2020.
However, although my country's smart TV market is huge and the shipment volume is high, the development of the smart TV industry is constrained by others.

MediaTek is highly monopolized
As we all know, the chip is the core component of the smart TV, which directly affects the image quality and audio performance of the smart TV. At present, smart TV chips are highly monopolized by MediaTek, and almost all major TV brands in the world adopt MediaTek chip solutions.
According to data released by the Everbright Securities Research Institute, the market share of smart TV chips produced by MediaTek is as high as 70%. And in the smart TV chip track, no manufacturer has the strength to threaten MediaTek's market position.

The author believes that MediaTek can have such a strong dominance in the TV chip market for three main reasons.
First, start early.
MediaTek has been deeply involved in the TV chip field for more than 20 years, and most of its competitors have disappeared or declined. Although the number of new players in the market continues to increase, the experience and technical barriers that MediaTek has accumulated over the past 20 years are difficult to break.
Second, strong research and development.
MediaTek not only has a solid foundation, but also attaches great importance to research and development. According to statistics from third-party organizations, MediaTek’s R&D accounted for 26% in 2019, ranking first among global semiconductor companies. In 2021, MediaTek's R&D expenditure is expected to reach 3 billion, setting a new historical record.

Third, pay attention to users.
MediaTek is good at observing the market and user needs, and timely adjusting the direction of technological evolution. For a simple example, in the early stage of the rise of smart TVs, MediaTek paid attention to chip cost and production capacity, which allowed MediaTek chips to quickly seize the market.
In the IoT era, connection and communication have become MediaTek’s key directions, and at present, with the upgrading of user consumption, MediaTek is again focusing on performance.
It can be seen that every time MediaTek makes a change, the new product can align with the pain points of the industry and users. This is also the core reason why MediaTek can lead the industry in the TV chip market for a long time and sit firmly on the throne of the chip.

Hisense makes great contributions
Of course, MediaTek chips are not completely irreplaceable. In the context of the continuous expansion of the smart TV market, many domestic companies have turned into smart TV chip dark horses, bringing surprises to users, and Hisense is one of them.
On December 20, the "China Core" Integration Industry Promotion Conference guided by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology was held in Zhuhai. Hisense independently designed and developed the ultra-high-definition image quality processing chip HV7827, which successfully won the Excellent Technology Innovation Product Award. It is worth mentioning that this is the fourth consecutive year that Hisense has won the award.
HV7827 is the industry's first image quality processor that supports folding display control functions. It can not only be used for ultra-high-definition TVs, but also play an important role in professional display and commercial display fields. Although Hisense does not have a high market share in the smart TV chip market, its strength should not be underestimated.
Hisense is the first domestic manufacturer to set foot in the TV chip field. As early as 2005, it successfully developed China's first digital video processing chip with independent intellectual property rights-Xinxin.

After years of development, Hisense has now formed a complete series of chip products. In the field of display-driven TCON chips, Hisense has even become a global leader. Its ultra-high-definition picture quality chip products have formed a technological monopoly in ultra-high-definition picture processing.

Another domestic chip realizes self-developed
Hisense's self-developed high-end picture quality chips can not only help Hisense gain a foothold in the high-end TV market, but also help the development of my country's TV industry.
As we all know, the global chip crisis is still ongoing, and there is no intention to stop in the short term. At present, in the TV stock market, smart TVs account for less than 50%, which means that the smart TV market has a lot of room for development.

In the case of market expansion and insufficient chip production capacity, which manufacturer can control the chip, which manufacturer has the opportunity to increase market share and achieve corner overtaking.
From this perspective, Hisense's self-research in the field of image quality chips is actually creating opportunities for itself and domestic related companies to "curve overtaking". It has a great positive impact on the development of my country's smart TV industry.
