Banned Huawei or caused DRAM prices to drop by as much as 15% in the third quarter

Release on : Jun 10, 2019

In the past two years, everyone’s impression of memory has soared all the time. With a computer light, a memory stick can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

However, from last year to now, flash memory and memory have continued to fall. Currently, SSDs that have been sold have reached the lowest price in history, and even SSDs with a price of 0.5 yuan/GB are not uncommon. As for memory, 8GB DDR4 memory in 2017 is close to 1,000 yuan. Now DDR4 2400MHz 8GB has generally come to the price around 200 yuan, even if compared with 700 yuan a year ago, its price has dropped by 70%. This caused Samsung to lose its position as the number one semiconductor.

Even if the price of memory has reached the historical lowest price, there is still the possibility of further decline.

Since May 16, the US Department of Commerce officially listed Huawei as an “entity list”, prohibiting US companies from selling related technologies and products to Huawei. US memory manufacturers led by Micron also officially issued a statement to suspend the supply of memory and flash memory particles to Huawei. At the same time, Micron also sent a letter requesting that major module manufacturers are not allowed to directly or indirectly supply related storage products such as modules, memory cards or solid state drives using Micron memory to Huawei and its related companies.

According to the sales forecast for the first quarter, the total sales volume of Huawei mobile phones is expected to reach 250 million units in 2019. According to the average 4GB capacity of each mobile phone, a total of 1 billion GB of memory is required. If Huawei can't get this part of the memory smoothly, it will cause a serious inventory backlog of memory manufacturers, and the DRAM market, which has already been oversupply, is further unbalanced. To stimulate market demand, price cuts are the most direct method.

Market intelligence firm TrendForce expects a ban on Huawei or a DRAM price drop of up to 15% in the third quarter.
