Prophesee launches first event-based industrial vision sensor

Vision sensors are a direct source of information for the entire machine vision system, consisting primarily of one or two graphic sensors, sometimes with light projectors and other ancillary equipment. The main function of the vision sensor is to obtain enough of the original image to be processed by the machine vision system.

Prophesee Metavision®

Prophesee Metavision®, the industry's first event-based, industry-standard packaged industrial vision sensor, is being introduced by Prophesee SA, an advanced neuro-visual systems design company, and is considered a major improvement over traditional frame-based vision methods. Next generation vision technology in automation and IoT systems.

After five years of development and commercial testing, this third-generation vision product, built with Prophesee's VGA-resolution image sensor, marks the first commercial implementation of event-based vision technology in an industry-standard package.

The new generation of Prophesee Metavision® sensors are designed to help camera developers implement next-generation vision functions for industrial automation and IoT systems such as robotics, inspection equipment, surveillance or surveillance equipment. It utilizes Prophesee's neuromorphic vision technology to provide efficient functions for a variety of usage modes, including ultra-high-speed component counting, vibration measurement, and monitoring or motion monitoring for predictive maintenance.

Each pixel in the Prophesee Metavision® sensor is independent and asynchronous and only activates when a scene change, motion, or event occurs. This event-based proprietary approach dramatically reduces the power, latency, and data processing issues associated with traditional frame-based vision systems.

Prophesee Metavision® sensors

This event-based approach enables sensors to achieve higher dynamic range than common high-speed vision applications. In addition, it makes sensors and systems that record events more cost-effective, otherwise these events are recorded with conventional cameras and need to run at 10,000 frames per second.

System developers can use this sensor to improve and in some cases create new industrial uses, including accelerated line quality assessment; robot positioning, sensing and motion guidance for better human-machine collaboration; and equipment Monitoring (eg, vibration, motion-induced deviations) allows the system to help predictive maintenance and reduce machine downtime.

The sensor provides a comprehensive software development kit (SDK), a full suite of drivers, data logging tools and online knowledge center support.

The chip is housed in a tiny PBGA package of 13 mm x 15 mm and incorporates the Prophesee third-generation CMOS image sensor (CIS) vision module. It has 640 x 480 pixel resolution, 15 um pixel size and 3/4 inch optical format.

It is manufactured on a 0.18 um dedicated CIS process and packaged by Kingpak, a leading CIS micro package.
