Intel released new solid state drive 665p, QLC flash density increased

On September 26th, at the Intel Storage Product Launch Conference held in South Korea today, Intel showed a large number of products for enterprises and data centers, but the company has not forgotten the new surprise of the consumer SSD product line. As the successor to the Intel 600p, the new Intel SSD 665p uses the same Huirong SM2263 four-channel master and QLC NAND flash with 4 bits per cell. The difference is that the new product has been upgraded to the second generation 96-layer 3D QLC NAND. However, it is not the latest series of PCI-e 4.0 channels, but the successor of QLC particle solid state 660p 665p.

It is reported that Intel 665p uses the same Huirong SM2263 four-channel controller as 660p, but innovated on NAND granules for Intel's second-generation 96-layer stack 3D QLC particles. Therefore, while reducing the overall chip size, it is also possible to retain a capacity of 1024 GB per chip. However, the volume reduction is still limited, so in the case of no change in the main control, there should be no higher capacity products than the 660p, but the price should be reduced.

Intel showed 665p speed running points at the event site. Under the same 1TB capacity, the 665p installed in the same test platform is 40%-50% faster than the 660p sequential reading and writing speed in the Beta version of the CrystalDiskMark 7 software. Random read and write performance has increased by about 30%.

665p running test

While increasing storage capacity and reducing the overall size of the chip, the Intel SSD665p can still use a single-core 1024GB capacity. In other words, you don't have to expect a huge increase in capacity and performance, but you can expect a lower price.

During the live demonstration, Intel will ship the Intel SSD 665p with pre-production firmware, compared to the 660p with the same capacity of 1TB, and both SSDs are installed in the same model ASUS notebook.

Results The beta version of the CrystalDiskMark 7 benchmark showed that the sequential access performance of the Intel SSD 665p increased by 40-50% and random access increased by about 30%.

It should be pointed out that the drive runs for a short duration and the hard disk is relatively empty, so these burst data can only be used as a reference for the SLC cache speed.

However, after comparing the measured results of the Intel SSD 660p, AnandTech pointed out that in the case of a sufficiently high queue depth, the sequential transmission can reach a similar 1.7 - 1.8 GB / s, so the actual I / O improvement of 665p may be only 20 % or so. As for the true performance of the QLC flash after the cache is exhausted, and the consumer acceptance level of the TLC flash, it remains to be tested.

Finally, according to the close-up photos of 665p and 660p shared by Nathan Kirsch of Legit Reviews, it shows that there is almost no change in the PCB part - still the single-sided M2-2280 board type, only four NAND can form a 2TB version.

Unfortunately, Intel has not disclosed the release date of 665p, but I believe we only have to wait for several months. In terms of price, it should be the same as the 660p sequence and even become one of the most affordable NVMe SSDs on the market.
