Vishay introduces a new proximity sensor that detects parking occupancy

Rilasciare : 16 ott 2019

According to foreign media reports, Vishay Intertechnology (Visit) optical electronics group recently launched a new proximity sensor VCNL3040, which can achieve a sensing distance of up to 30 cm. Incorporating infrared emitters, photo proximity detectors, amplifiers, and ADC circuits in a package, the VCNL3040 sensor also features programmable interrupts to support IC (internal integrated circuits, a serial communication bus) communication interface. Effective object detection and collision detection in a variety of consumer and industrial applications.

The device is ideal for smart homes, industrial, office, toy products, etc. Compared to previous generation sensors, the device's proximity detection distance has increased by 33%, and the cost is lower than similar solutions on the market. Applications include activation of displays, detection of robots and toys, collision detection of parking spaces, and proximity detection of toilets when objects are detected in printers, copiers, and household appliances.

The VCNL3040's programmable interrupt feature allows designers to specify high and low thresholds to reduce continuous communication with the microcontroller. In addition, the proximity sensor selects 12-bit and 16-bit outputs, uses smart cancellation to eliminate crosstalk, and intelligent continuous design ensures accurate sensing and faster response times. The transmitter has a peak wavelength of 940 nm and no visible "red tail".

The device's supply voltage is 2.5V to 3.6V (IC bus voltage range is 1.8V to 3.3V), with excellent temperature compensation in the temperature range of minus 40 degrees Celsius and 85 degrees Celsius. In addition, the sensor is available in a Pb-free, 8-pin QFN package that is RoHS compliant, halogen-free, and Vishay green. Currently, the new VCNL3040 proximity sensor is available in samples and is also available in volume production, with lead times of 8 to 12 weeks for larger orders.

About proximity sensor

The proximity sensor is a general term for sensors that do not require contact with a detection object for detection, instead of a contact detection method such as a limit switch. The movement information and the presence information of the detectable object are converted into electrical signals.
